DESCRIPTION OF HOUSEHOLD/FARM
In nature, this plant grows in Canada and southern parts of the US. At the end of the last century, Michurin took this plant to Russia where it was planted as a fruit variety. Different varieties were obtained by selecting, and they are grown today successfully on European countries such as: Germany, Estonia, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Aronia tolerates high and low temperatures, up to -35 degrees with plenty of rainfall. It is not demanding in terms of composition and nutritional value, and it can be planted in both far north to southern areas where there is no frost and snow.
In Serbia, approximately 30 years ago, the plantations with aronia appeared in the municipality of Gornji Milanovac, then in Knjaževac, but a few years later, it turned out that this variety is not adequate and the production stopped. Whether it was stopped due to negligence or ignorance was not clear.
Aronia is a genus of deciduous shrubs in the family Rosaceae. There is red and purple aronia, but they are grown as ornamental shrubs. It is planted as a shrub, at a distance of 1.5-2m. Hoeing is not necessary around seedlings, because young roots can be destroyed in that way. Sawdust mulch and pine needles are enough.
Pruning is done every year and poor, underdeveloped branches are removed. Every 5-6 years on the shrub branches that are the oldest are removed, and those that are younger and more fertile remain. In order to get better yield, it is desirable for each shrub to have 12-20 shoots. For higher yield, older shoots are replaced with younger ones. Aronia can give yields 20-30 years, and it is necessary to prune it. Aronia ripen simultaneously and it is very easy to pick berries. Mature fruits do not fall off and can remain up t a month on a plant after ripening.
